Two new cello octets

Commissioned by the music festival "Cellolyd i Lofoten" in the beautiful village of Reine in Loften, Norway, two cello octets—one by Tanja Orning and one by Christian Wallumrød—will receive their world premieres on Aug 8 featuring Orning herself on the cello along with guest cellist Martin Menking and the festival cello ensemble. Sonata for Two

With Father's Day fast approaching, Trio Cleonice and Friends will present the world premiere of Richard Wernick's Sonata for Two on Jun 2 in Brookline, Massachusetts featuring the trio's cellist Gwen Krosnick alongside her father and guest cellist Joel Krosnick. The father and daughter, whom the new work was written for as a 70th birthday present to Mr. Krosnick, will round off the concert with Schubert's cello quintet with violinists Ari Issacman-Beck and Emily Smith, and violist Samuel Rhodes. "Aviary Sketches" for string trio

Co-commissioned by Wigmore Hall and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Helen Grime's "Aviary Sketches (after Joseph Cornell)" will be premiered by violinist Arnaud Sussmann, violist Matthew Lipman and cellist David Finckel on May 8 at Wigmore Hall in London, U.K., followed by a U.S. premiere later this year on Nov 10 at Alice Tully Hall in New York.

"A Distant Drum"

Commissioned by Carnegie Hall, "A Distant Drum" based on the life of Nat Nakasa who left South Africa during the Apartheid years for New York, will be premiered Oct 13-14 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, followed by a US premiere in New York on Oct 28.

The US premiere—part of Carnegie Hall's festival "UBUNTU: Music and Arts of South Africa"—features Daniel Hope (Artistic Director, Violin), Vincent Segal (Cello) and Jason Marsalis (Percussion), with Ralf Schmid (Music Director, Composer, Keyboards), Michael Olatuja (Bass) and actors Nat Ramabulana and Christiaan Schoombie.
